Two Girls and Two Dogs Take a Walk Through Historic Alexandria, Virginia

This weekend we finally got a break from winter and took advantage of it.  Boomer and I joined our friend Jean and her dog Daisy for a 6 mile urban hike from our Del Ray neighborhood through Old Town and back home.

Jean and I are friends, neighbors, and our career paths have a number of similarities.  In addition to exercise and time with the dogs – I was excited for time with my friend.

Fitbits full charged and humans fully caffeinated, we took off on our trek that would take us through a variety of Alexandria neighborhoods, to the Potomac River, through historic Old Town and back to Del Ray.

The morning was ours for exercise, dog time and some much needed girl time – perfect for solving the world’s problems, a walk of this nature provides many “snoop-worthy” stops and google moments.

Our Del Ray neighborhood was built around a rail yard in the late 1800s.  Crossing those historic (and currently used) train tracks was the beginning of our hike.

Along the way we ran into dogs (and their owners) and one of Jean’s colleagues and his dog.

Boomer and Daisy did well on the walk, and about 40 minutes into our excursion, they got a well-deserved play break at Old Town’s Founder's Park in the heart of Old Town and on the Potomac River.  Old Town Alexandria, Virginia is a town with a rich history, and played a featured role in the Revolutionary War, the formation of Washington, D.C., and the Civil War.  Today, it’s the backdrop of the PBS series Mercy Street.  It’s also a great place to window shop, grab a bite to eat and wander streets that look close to the way they did 200 years ago.
A much needed romp in Founder's Park

We leave Founder’s Park we work our way past the Torpedo Factory.  The Torpedo Factory actively produced torpedoes until the end of World War II.

It was used for storage by the federal government until the mid-1970s when it was turned into an arts center.  Today it houses nearly 100 art galleries and studios.

From the Torpedo Factory we turned up one of our favorite streets – Cameron Street.  We passed the backside of the familiar Carlyle House, which was once part of the Mansion House Hotel.
The back of the Carlyle House, the focal point of Mercy Street

During the Civil War, Alexandria – a Southern town and the hometown of Robert E Lee, was occupied by Union troops.  Any large home or building (hotel) was immediately taken by the Union and turned into a hospital or utilized by the Army.  This is largely the plot of Mercy Street.

Jean, Daisy, Boomer and I have walked about 6,000 steps when we hit Wise’s Tavern – at the corner of Cameron and North Fairfax streets.  On April 16th 1789, George Washington was first publically addressed as President of the United States at an event at Wise’s Tavern.
Wise's Tavern

We stop and say hi to a passerby and her dog.  It turns out she’s the owner of the dog-friendly Sonoma Cellar on King Street.  We plan on visit for their Taco Tuesday and wine tasting.

A few blocks further up Cameron is Gadsby's Tavern – which is where the Colonial elite hung out – including George and Martha Washington.  Their “city” house is within eyesight of the tavern.  Apparently Martha wasn’t much of a cook, so when they were in the city, they had their meals at Gadsby’s.  Like much of Old Town, Gadsby’s is also said to be haunted.

As we hit Washington Street one of the two main thoroughfares in Old Town, we are facing Christ Church, which was the home church to both the Washington and Lee families.

Walking down Washington Street we pass Oronoco Street where the Lee family lived in several homes, including the Lee Fendall House, where Jean had her wedding reception.  At the end of the block at St. Asaph Street is  Old Towne School for Dogs which is packed full of delicious treats, accessories and food for dogs and cats.

We cross Washington Street and walk down Oronoco heading into the Parker Gray neighborhood, which was created during and after the Civil War for freedmen and emancipated slaves.  The neighborhood remained historically significant during the Civil Right era with notable leaders of that movement residing in the neighborhood.

We’ve broken the 10,000 step mark as we turn down Fayette Street – looking at renovated houses, sleeping secret gardens, and courtyards that look eager for spring.
A beautiful garden waiting for Spring

Finally, crossing back to our side of the railroad tracks, we’re home.  We’ve made new friends, seen some old ones, solved the world’s problems, made plans for Taco Tuesday and had some quality girl and dog time!

A Winter Trip to Virginia’s Dog Friendly Wineries

Spring, summer and fall are perfect times to load the dogs in the jeep and head out to Virginia’s wine country for a day of sips, walks, shopping and lunch on a dog-friendly patio.  But the cold wet winter months are a bit more challenging.

Undeterred by the freezing forecast -- my husband, friend Alyson (visiting from California), Boomer, Kacey and I took the 50 mile drive from Alexandria to Delaplane, Virginia.

Our first stop was Barrel Oak Winery (www.barreloak.com ).  Upon arrival, there is little doubt that Barrel Oak is dog-friendly.  We are immediately met by dogs leaving the tasting room, or just taking a potty break.  To say that Barrel Oak loves dogs would be an understatement.  The tasting room is filled with owners and their dogs.  The gift shop has great dog-inspired items, and their wines pay homage to canines, such as their Chocolate Lab Dessert Wine.  A quick look at their events calendar and I see two dog-focused fundraisers in the month of February.

It’s hard NOT to have fun at Barrel Oak.  There is a buzzy welcoming vibe – everyone is happy! Friends and families are picnicking on the fire pit heated patio.  Kids and dogs are getting lots of attention.  We slide up for a tasting and quickly realize that we are standing next to a couple and their dog Tucker from our neighborhood!  Wine and dogs are great conversation starters!

We purchased a couple of bottles from our server Nate, and then headed to our next stop – Aspen Dale Winery (www.aspendalewinery.com ).

While Barrel Oak has the buzzy festive atmosphere, Aspen Dale is closer to a cool coffee shop (but with wine and in an old barn).  Dogs are also welcome in the tasting room which is warm, hip, and relaxed.  A soloist on guitar plays “coffee shop” music.  There is a fire in the fireplace.  Dogs relax on the floor and owners sit on comfy couches, at café tables, or stand at the tasting bar.

Aspen Dale provides a small plate of “pairings” to go with the wines – a piece of apricot, a bite of sausage, a bit of chocolate – all perfectly paired with each wine.  We loved it!  We loved it so much we purchased a bottle of their Parris Country Red Blend (yum), some pheasant sausage and sage cheese for a little snack.  Aspen Dale is one of those special places where you could easily spend the entire afternoon.

From Aspen Dale, we wandered a bit, but thanks to iPhones and GPS, we eventually found Cobbler Mountain Cellars (www.cobblermountain.com ).  Located on a hill off of a couple twisty gravel roads is their lovely tasting room.  Like Barrel Oak and Aspen Dale, it’s also in Delaplane, but it's the youngest of the three wineries.

The Cobbler Mountain Paw Wall
Cobbler Mountain is very friendly.  We immediately felt welcomed and the dogs were appropriately gushed over!   Given its location – far off of a main road, dogs can actually go off leash in their yard.  An entire wall in their tasting room is covered with paw prints and the names of their dogs and dog clients.

Cobbler Mountain Cellars often hosts groups of dogs and their owners for special events – there was a recent gathering of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and in the summer and early fall, Cobbler Mountain holds weekend camping and hiking trips for owners and their dogs.
New friends at Cobbler Mountain

We left Cobbler Mountain with a bottle of Vidal Blanc and a promise to return.

Our winter outing to Delaplane, Virginia wineries was great fun.  Boomer and Kacey got plenty of attention in three very different and welcoming wineries.  We got to taste and purchase great wines in a variety of settings – winter was the perfect time to visit Barrel Oak, Aspen Dale and Cobbler Mountain – but we’ll go again in the spring!

There are currently 253 wineries in Virginia and MANY are dog friendly.  Only California, New York, Oregon and Washington have more wineries than Virginia.
www.virginiawine.org, lists all wineries and their regions.  You can also filter by varietals and if the winery is pet friendly.

My Dog Digs Del Ray

My husband and I, along with our two dogs and two cats live in a magical place called Del Ray – at least the dogs think it’s magical.  My husband and I think it’s a wonderful place to live and the cats are very happy with the urban wildlife they watch from their various indoor perches.

Del Ray is a front porch neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia – a couple miles from historic Old Town, a couple of miles from the Pentagon and about 6 miles from the U.S. Capitol.  Our inside the beltway oasis, “Where Main Street Still Exists”, features tree lined streets, pocket parks and is home to some of the area’s best restaurants, shops, and dog friendly stops.

Our neighborhood was once home to a race track (our 1920 Bungalow is built on one of the turns). Gambling, drinking and the various nefarious activities that come with gambling and drinking were once the order of the day for Del Ray.  The majority of Del Ray's inhabitants worked at the Potomac Yard rail yard -- the rail yard's carpenter built and lived in the house across from ours.  His granddaughter owned it and ultimately sold it in the mid-1990s.

A century later -- the President  frequently stops by for pizza, a burger, or frozen custard.  And our little neighborhood is often featured on HGTV’s House Hunters.   https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=del+ray+alexandria+va+house+hunters

With every season there is a celebration in Del Ray.  In the spring we have the House Tour, the summer brings A Taste of Del Ray and First Thursdays.  The first First Thursday of the summer season honors our canines -- Dog Days of Del Ray.  Local businesses lure dogs and owners with agility courses, first aid for dogs, treats, toys and demonstrations. Area rescue groups line the streets with adoptable dogs and cats -- for the rare family that has neither, or more than likely, needs another!
In the fall, it’s Art on the Avenue, a Halloween parade and the annual Turkey Trot 5 mile run.  Winter and the holidays bring a tree lighting and our main street lined with luminaries.  Our farmer’s market operates year round and serves as the Saturday morning gathering place.

Lest you think these celebrations are small neighborhood gatherings, the First Thursday festivals are typically enjoyed by over 1,000 people, the Turkey Trot boasts 5,000 runners, the Halloween parade has upwards of 8,000 attendees, and I am told that Art on the Avenue draws as many as 30,000 people to our neighborhood.  They are also dog friendly, because everyone in Del Ray has a dog!
Art on the Avenue

Walk down Mt Vernon Avenue, or The Avenue, as well call it and your dog will pull you into the bank,  dry cleaner, hardware store, garden shop, pharmacy, boutique, bike shop, car dealer, coffee shop, or duh – the natural pet food or dog accessory store, because they all have TREATS!

We typically begin our mornings at St Elmo’s Coffee Pub, where  dogs await their reward for, well, waiting while humans get their lattes.   Owners pay it forward by ensuring the free treat jar is always filled for not only the next day, but the next dog and owner that stop in.

Del Ray is also home to the area’s first dog park.  A group of frequent users are working with the City of Alexandria  to raise money and make improvements to the park.  From lemonade and coffee sales to t-shirts and a mobile boutique called The Thread Truck (https://www.facebook.com/TheThreadTruck) – Del Ray dog lovers and business owners are working together to ensure the dog park is safe, healthy and fun!

T-Shirts to support the dog park are being sold at  Nature's Nibbles

If you’re hungry for Ethiopian, Thai, French, Mexican, pizza, sushi, barbeque, Italian, burgers, subs , a salad or just a glass of wine and some cheese --  you can find it in Del Ray.  And for the most part – your dog can join you on the patio.
Del Ray Pizzeria

The Del Ray Café, a delicious French restaurant which unfortunately doesn’t have a patio to accommodate dogs, has more than made up for its architectural snafu by creating addictive dog treats.  Created by a classically trained French chef, the Del Ray Café’s dog treats are baked in house and contain chicken liver and bacon (I am told they are delicious).  The friendly staff will see a dog walking outside (sometimes before the restaurant opens) and happily bring them a treat, just another example of the magic of Del Ray.
